Friends of Child Advocates of Fort Bend

Friends is an auxiliary league for Child Advocates of Fort Bend.  Begun nearly 25 years ago, Friends has over 100 members, is managed by a Friends Council and provides volunteer opportunities and social events throughout the year.

Friends supports the children served by Child Advocates of Fort Bend directly through a Special Needs Fund for items and services that these children need but are unable to afford. They run a Back-To-School program every year by purchasing and providing over 100 filled, personalized backpacks for the children.  They also help raise awareness about child abuse by co-hosting April’s Light of Hope Ceremony and help throughout the year with various projects including Gala and Christmas Home Tour mailings, providing food for Volunteer Trainings and Case Closing Celebrations, volunteering at the office or at an event, the Christmas Home Tour or Gala.  Refer to website section Board and Councils/Friends Council for additional information.

Special Needs Funds

CAFB cannot purchase items directly for the children we serve due to an inherent conflict of interest.  Friends Council provides this direct assistance through their Special Needs Fund which reviews and grants Special Needs Requests for children’s needs which have included clothing, recognition awards, medical expenses, extra-curricular activities and camperships that children and their families are not able to afford.  In the past, Friends Council has funded a tombstone for a baby who died, purchased a class ring for a graduating senior, letter jacket for a high school student, driver’s license class and a prom dress.

Back To School Program

Friends Council coordinates and funds our annual Back-To-School Program which provides 150 personalized backpacks for children from pre-K through high school.

Light of Hope Ceremony

Friends Council assists with the planning and execution of our annual Light of Hope/Blue Ribbon event to raise awareness about child abuse and bring attention to April Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Membership Coffees and Martini Nights

Annually in October and in the Spring, Friends Council hosts a morning Friends Coffee and an evening Martini Night at a private home.  These are opportunities to welcome new members, share the many contributions made by the council during the year and enjoy a guest speaker, fashion show, decorating ideas or other entertainment.

Special Projects

Friends Council members help out with various projects throughout the year including Gala and Christmas Home Tour mailings, providing food for Volunteer Training and Case Closing Celebrations, volunteering at the office or at an event, the Christmas Home Tour or Gala.

There are approximately 100 members of Friends.  They welcome new members at their Fall Coffee and Spring Martini Night.  Membership is $35 per year. If you are interested in information about Friends, contact President Pat Somers at tootsomers@gmail.com or 281-782-9063.  If you are interested in becoming a member, contact Alison Haralson, Membership Chair, at alisonharalson@sbcglobal.net or 832-652-8112.
